Revealing the Raven's Loft

When we last left our group of intrepid(inept?) adventurers, they were lounging outside of the inn in the swamp town of Maquis d'savange.

Kelios, being the inquisitive type of person that she is, decided to intrude upon the grief of the poor townsfolk and pester them during the funeral service. Although the townsfolk were very tight lipped during the service, she did see that the coffin was wrapped in chains and that there was a pounding coming from inside.

Feeling that she was not wanted, she started to return to her companions to reveal this information, when she was confronted by the town constable. Being her usual, evasive self, Kelios slyly answered the constables' questions and turned over some of her weapons. When the constable tried to escort her away from the church, Kelios made a grab for her weapons and tried to break free. The constable beat her soundly about the head and shoulders, of course. Tyro noticed the commotion and went to investigate. When the constable searched Kelios and found a hidden dagger, no one disagreed that she had deserved a night in jail.

Tyro, Bernardo and Peotr were warned by the constable to stay near the inn and leave as soon as possible. It seemed that there were strange happenings in the town and that people had been disappearing at night. The constable also confirmed the suspicions that Luke, the albino lad that had been rescued from the swamp, was a bit touched in the head. It seems that there were people in town who wished to do him harm and that the best place for him was in his hut in the swamp. The constable promised to take him back. Lounging in the inn, the adventurers meet Dunkin Loot, a traveling merchant. Talking with Dunkin revealed that the town priest might be able to assist with the quest to find the lost temple, as well as being able to provide some supplies. A quick talk with father Brushin revealed that he did remember the temple that we were seeking and that he probably had a map hidden in the church attic. He would search for it and give us all the information he could find in the morning.

It seemed that even prison could not keep Kelios from causing trouble. When the lad from the inn brought her some food and water and inquired as to what she had done to receive such treatment, she answered that she 'had refused to give up her virtue'. That, and her semi-naked lounging caused the boy to quickly run away. Kelios neglected to mention that she had named the hidden dagger 'virtue'.

After some more time spent lounging around the inn, the group decided to join Dunkin on an evening walk. During this walk a hideously foul odor wafted in from the swamp. Dunkin was particularly affected by it and could not seem to recover from the stench. One of the barmaid retold a story of how a patron had dropped dead in the inn and how that same stench had appeared before his death. After securing the inn everyone drifted off into a wonderful sleep.

Except Kelios. While the prison shack was uncomfortable, the growling, shuffling noises that she heard were what keep her awake. She managed to hide in the shack until the noises went away, but she maintained her vigilance all night.

In the morning, Kelios was released and rejoined her companions for breakfast. During this time it was discovered that Dunkin had contracted swamp fever during the night. Father Brushin and Bernardo did not have the skills to cure him, although the father did remember seeing a holy document in the church attic that might be able to cure the disease. After much preparation and studying, the ancient document was consulted and the inscription was read. As the inscription faded from the parchment there was a sense of hope, but it was too brief. There was no immediate improvement in Dunkin's condition, although it was generally agreed that this miracle could take some time.

Just after this time, it was time for mass. Even Kelios saw that it would be in her best interest to attend the mass. On the way to mass Tyro and Peotr notice the constable searching an alley. When tyro moved to investigate he noticed that the ground and buildings had been splattered with blood. The constable ordered him to move on and Tyro did so gladly. Once in the church the father gave a rousing ceremony and everyones hearts were enlightened. Although there were some strange looks cast towards the adventurers. After the mass, the local inhabitants gathered to gossip and we were able to over hear many tidbits of information. It seems that many people had been going missing and that some of the dead people had been seen wandering around at night. Obviously this was not the case. What must have happened was that swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Kelios and Tyro returned to the inn, where Kelios retired for the day and Tyro kept watch over Dunkin. Bernardo and Peotr stayed at the church with father Brushin to assist in looking for the documents that would reveal the location of the lost swamp temple.

Some time later, Dunkin took a turn for the worse. Black foam started drooling from his mouth and he snarled and lurched about. He attacked Tyro and the fight spilled out into the hallway. Kelios was able to hear the commotion, grabbed a skillet and came to investigate. When she arrived, Tyro and Dunkin were locked in a deathly struggle. Tyro told Kelios to summon father Brushin. She agreed and then tossed the skillet into the melee, scoring a perfect hit....on Tyro. Tyro lapsed into unconsciousness while Kelios ran to the church. Beranrdo and Peotr did not hear Kelios enter, but she was able to convince Father Brushin that something was amiss and he rushed back towards the inn. Kelios made a quick stop in the kitchen for some knives and then ran upstairs. Once there she notice the inn-keeper, Tyro and father Brushin laying on the floor, covered in blood with Dunkin feasting upon them. The inn-keeper then sat up and managed to bite Kelios. Using her impressive climbing skills, she managed to climb out of one of the rooms, onto the roof, into another window and heal Tyro without getting attacked by the zombified inn-keeper or Dunkin. Tyro lured the zombies into another room and leapt/fell out of the window and then charged back into the inn to try and rescue father Brushin. Kelios was able to magically summon a small pack of dogs, which managed to bring down one of the zombies and keep them occupied long enough for Tyro to pull the father down the stairs. They were about to bolt into the night when the constable enter the inn and rushed upstairs to confront the remaining zombie.

Meanwhile, back at the church, Bernardo and Peotr continued their search while they waited for the father to bring them some wine. When they heard footsteps on the stairs, they were observant enough to notice that they did not sound normal. Wisely hiding behind some boxes, they watched as 2 zombies staggered into the attic and started wandering around. Seizing the moment Bernardo rushed past them and down the stairs, waiting at the door to slam it as soon as Peotr rushed past. Peotr, not quite understanding the plan, jumped up and ran headlong into the zombies. Feeling trapped and looking for safety, he ran back and locked himself in the closet. The zombies were undeterred by the doors and continued their assault on Peotr. Bernardo, showing the cunning for which he is known, ran up the stairs and lured the zombies back into the church proper. Some quick dodges and twists later and he had managed to scoot back up the stairs and lock the door behind him. After attending to Peotr's wounds, they fashioned a rope and climbed down. Acting quickly, they barred the doors to the church and trapped the zombies inside and then rushed off towards the inn.

And thus endeth the night....go in peace.
